My
voice…My turn is a project we are doing to help people in our community
learn more about what it is really like to live with a disability. The
way that we did this was by asking people with developmental disabilities
what life was like for them and what they wanted people around them
to understand about their lives.
Often
the ideas that the newspaper and television send us about disability
are not created by people with disabilities. We wanted to change that!
Getting
your ideas!
To
get ideas from people all across Alberta we sent out information about
My voice…My turn to different people and organizations. We also did
workshops with different groups of people and went to the Self-advocacy
Summit. The Self-advocacy Summit was a meeting where people with disabilities
in Alberta who speak out about their rights got together. We asked everyone
what they wanted to say about their lives. People had a lot to say!
They drew pictures, wrote stories and poetry and even made music! You
can look at all of the different ideas that people sent in on this website!
Please do!
What
have we done?
There
were so many ideas we needed help! We brought together a group of people
to look at all of the ideas and put some together to make bigger ideas.
Click the links below to see a few of the things we've done so far!
